Add a workstation from fezu.dev
Copy one command from your account page on fezu.dev and paste it into a terminal on the workstation you want to add. It installs VCode and links the workstation to your account. You type no email and no code.
Why you would use it
You want a new workstation in your box list. The command installs VCode and links the box in one step. Use it on a new workstation, or on one already installed that is not linked yet.
How to use it
Log in on fezu.dev and open fezu.dev/account. In the app, the box list has a link to it: Add a workstation on fezu.dev (
#rs-boxes-site). It opens in the same tab. On a computer, a login to an account with no workstation yet goes straight to Add a workstation; skip to step 3.Under Workstations, tap Add a workstation.
Tap the workstation's system: Linux, Windows or macOS, one button each with its logo. The page starts on the system your browser runs on. macOS gets the same command as Linux, and Windows installs natively, with no WSL (install-on-windows).
On Linux and macOS:
curl -fsSL https://fezu.dev/install | V_CODE_JOIN=<code> shOn Windows, in PowerShell:
$env:V_CODE_JOIN='<code>'; irm https://fezu.dev/install.ps1 | iexSend install counts (
#add-counts) is ticked. Untick it and the command setsV_CODE_NO_ANALYTICS, so the installer sends no install counts (install-counts).Tap Copy.
Paste the command into a terminal on the other workstation, logged in as the user VCode should run as. The installer runs as in install-on-linux, install-on-macos or install-on-windows. At the end it joins, and prints:
v-code: linked to you@example.com v-code: paired with Chrome on Linux v-code: Use it in the app: https://app.fezu.devThe second line names the browser that showed the command on fezu.dev. On a computer with a desktop session the command also installs the VCode desktop app, and the join opens it signed in to your account. The terminal then prints
Opened the VCode app.after the second line (desktop-app).The account page shows when the workstation links, and adds it to its list.
Open app.fezu.dev (see use-the-app). The new workstation is in the box list, and the app opens it with your other boxes. An app that is open already adds it within 30 seconds, with the toast
New workstation on your account. It is in your list now.
On a workstation that is already installed, the same command joins without
reinstalling: the installer prints v-code: already installed: <version>; joining, renders no unit and restarts nothing. From a terminal on such a box,
the join is v-code box join, which reads the code on stdin:
printf '%s\n' '<code>' | v-code box join
App only
To put only the desktop app on a computer, with no workstation, tick App only
(#add-app-only) under the system buttons. The page at
/account/add?app=only opens with it ticked. The command changes to:
curl -fsSL https://fezu.dev/install | V_CODE_APP=only V_CODE_START=<start code> sh
$env:V_CODE_APP='only'; $env:V_CODE_START='<start code>'; irm https://fezu.dev/install.ps1 | iex
The hint reads Paste this into a terminal on the computer you want the VCode app on. It installs only the app, signed in to this account, and adds no workstation. Copy makes a new start code each time. It works once, within 5 minutes.
Copy puts a fresh start code in place of <start code> before it copies. The
page waits for no workstation, and New command is hidden. Untick App only to
get the join command back
(desktop-app).
What you see
What the terminal prints when it does not join:
| Output | What to do |
|---|---|
v-code: V_CODE_JOIN is not a join code; copy the command again |
The value is not 34 letters, digits, - and _. Copy the whole command again. The installer checks this before it downloads anything, and never prints the value. |
v-code: V_CODE_JOIN is for an install; --update never links |
Drop --update. |
v-code: this release does not support V_CODE_JOIN |
The release does not know the join yet. Install without V_CODE_JOIN and link with your email (link-this-box). |
The join did not complete: 400 that code is wrong, used or expired; make a new command under Add a workstation |
The code was used or is over 15 minutes old. Make a new command. |
The join did not complete: 409 this box is linked to another account; unlink it first |
Run v-code box unlink, then make a new command. If the box was unlinked already, or the unlink said fezu.dev did not remove it, remove it on the other account's page first. |
The join did not complete: 403 This account needs premium to link a box. |
Renew on the account page. |
The join did not complete: 502 the site's answer does not match this join code |
The box writes nothing. Make a new command. |
The number is the box's HTTP status. Each The join did not complete: line is
followed by Make a new command under Add a workstation on fezu.dev/account.
The install itself stays: VCode runs, unlinked or linked as it was, and the
installer still prints the app line.
v-code box join with the code as an argument stops with
v-code: join reads the code from stdin, never from the command line. A code
of the wrong shape stops it with the join code is 34 letters, digits, - and _, from Add a workstation on fezu.dev/account.
Options and settings
| Option | Default | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Code lifetime | 15 minutes | Fixed. |
| Uses | 1 | Fixed. The site spends the code at the first redeem, even one it refuses. |
V_CODE_JOIN |
(unset) | The join code, in the installer's environment. Never an argument. |
App only (#add-app-only) |
unticked | The command installs only the desktop app, signed in with a start code. |
V_CODE_NO_ANALYTICS |
(unset) | Set by the command when Send install counts is unticked: the installer sends no install counts. See install-counts. |
Limits and known gaps
- The installer supports Linux x86_64 and ARM64, Windows x64 and macOS on
Apple silicon or Intel. On Linux ARM64 there is no desktop app, so App only
stops with
VCode desktop app: not available on Linux ARM64 yet; skipped(install-on-macos). - The app (app.fezu.dev) makes no commands. Adding a workstation is only on fezu.dev/account.
- Whoever runs the command first gets the workstation on your account. If the command leaks, in a screen share or a chat, and someone else runs it within 15 minutes, their workstation links to your account. Check the name the account page shows. Run where the desktop app is installed, the command also signs that app in to your account.
- A Windows install that needs a restart outlives the code. After the restart, make a new command.
- The code is in the shell history and the terminal's scrollback. The site part is single use, and the secret part is useless once the join is done or the code has expired.
- The join pairs the workstation with the browser that showed the command on fezu.dev, not with the app. The app opens it because it is on your account (add-a-phone).
