Frequently asked questions

The basics

What is VCode?

VCode runs Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Cursor on your own workstation, and you drive them from your phone, tablet or laptop at app.fezu.dev. The agents do the work on the workstation. The app shows their tabs and sends your messages.

Which agents does VCode run?

Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Cursor. If one is missing on a workstation, VCode can install it from your phone and start its login. On Windows that works for Claude Code and OpenCode, and the app shows the command to run for the others.

Do I need my own Claude or ChatGPT plan?

Yes. The agents run with your own logins and plans. VCode sells no AI usage of its own.

What does VCode cost?

VCode is free for 30 days, then $10 a month or $96 a year. Prices in pounds and euros are on the pricing page. You can also pay once for Lifetime. We sell a limited number of Lifetime plans.

Setting up

Which computers can run VCode?

Linux on an x64 machine, a Mac with Apple silicon or Intel on macOS 13.5 or later, and Windows 10 version 2004 or Windows 11 on an x64 PC. Windows needs no WSL, and its support is in beta. Windows on ARM is not supported.

How do I install it?

Run curl -fsSL https://fezu.dev/install | sh in a terminal on Linux or a Mac, or irm https://fezu.dev/install.ps1 | iex in PowerShell on Windows. You need no git, Node, npm or administrator rights. When it finishes, VCode opens and you log in or create an account with your email. We send a code to it. A new account gets a 30-day trial. To add a computer to an account you already have, copy the command from Add a workstation on your account page instead. The step-by-step pages are in the docs.

Which devices can I use it from?

Any recent browser at app.fezu.dev, on a phone, a tablet or a laptop. Install it to your home screen or desktop and it opens like an app. On an iPhone, use Safari and add it to the home screen to get notifications.

Can I use more than one workstation?

Yes. Add each one from your account page. The app shows the tabs of all of them in one place.

Privacy and security

Can VCode read my code?

No. Your phone talks to your workstation over an encrypted channel. The VCode router only forwards it, and cannot read your chats, code or files.

What does VCode keep on its servers?

Your email address once you add one, the name of each workstation and device and when it last connected, and the settings that sync between your workstations, including your system prompt. Your chats and files stay on your workstation. The agents still send your prompts and code to their own providers, as they do in a terminal.

Does my workstation open a port to the internet?

No. VCode on the workstation listens only on the machine itself. It keeps one outgoing connection open to the VCode router, renews its certificate with fezu.dev every 30 minutes and syncs your settings there, and checks dl.fezu.dev for a new release every hour. When an agent opens a web preview, it gets a certificate for it from Let's Encrypt. The agents and the usage meters talk to their own providers with your logins.

Using VCode

Does my workstation have to stay on?

Yes. The agents run on it. Switch it off and its tabs stop. VCode can keep it from going to sleep: pick Off, While agents work or Always for each workstation. Closing a laptop lid still puts it to sleep. On Windows, VCode runs only while you are logged in.

What happens when my phone loses its connection?

The agents keep working on the workstation. A message you send while offline waits on the phone and goes out when the connection is back. With notifications on, your phone buzzes when a tab finishes, needs your approval, or hits a usage limit.

Can I pick up a session I started in a terminal?

Yes, for Claude Code and Codex. VCode imports the transcript into a new tab, and your next message continues the same session.

Can I talk instead of typing?

Yes, on Linux, once the transcription service is on your workstation. Run bash ~/.local/share/v-code/current/install.sh voice once. It downloads a 482 MB speech model and needs uv and ffmpeg. A Mac or a Windows PC has no dictation yet.

How does VCode stay up to date?

It checks for a new release every hour and installs it only while no agent is working. If the new version does not start, it goes back to the old one. It can also update each agent every hour: turn that on per agent in the Agents card of the settings. On Windows the agents update themselves.

How do I uninstall it?

On Linux or a Mac, run ~/.local/share/v-code/current/install.sh uninstall. It removes VCode and its services. On Windows, run $env:V_CODE_UNINSTALL=1; irm https://fezu.dev/install.ps1 | iex in PowerShell. It removes VCode, its Startup shortcut and its PATH entry. Your settings and tab history stay on disk.

Troubleshooting

Why is Update every hour greyed out for an agent?

npm installed that agent, and VCode does not update an npm install: its update needs root, or puts the new copy in the wrong place. The note under the switch has the command that fixes it. Tap Copy, then paste it into a terminal on that workstation. It removes the npm copy and installs the agent with its own installer. Then close and reopen the settings, and the switch works again.

An agent update failed with exit status 243. How do I fix it?

The agent was installed with sudo npm install -g, so its update needs root and fails. Reinstall it without npm in a terminal on that workstation. For Codex:

sudo npm uninstall -g @openai/codex
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh

For Claude Code:

sudo npm uninstall -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

Then open a new terminal and check that codex --version or claude --version works.
